Biography

Frank Ermschel (Bochum, 1957) studied painting at the FH Aachen from 1983 to 1989. After this he studied art history and philosophy at the University of Trier. Ermschel was largely influenced by the most important art movement of the 1970s: conceptualism. This movement is seen as a reaction to minimalism, which tested the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. In conceptualism, the concept is more important than aesthetic or material-technical motives.

Biografie

Frank Ermschel (Bochum, 1957) studeerde van 1983 tot 1989 schilderkunst aan de FH Aachen. Hierna studeerde hij kunstgeschiedenis en filosofie aan de Universiteit van Trier. Ermschel werd grotendeels beïnvloed door de belangrijkste kunststroming uit de jaren zeventig: het conceptualisme. Deze stroming wordt gezien als een reactie op het minimalisme die met zijn revolutionaire kenmerken de grenzen van de kunst op de proef stelde. Bij het conceptualisme is het concept belangrijker is dan esthetische of materiaal-technische motieven.
